In many ways, our society is at a crossroads. Whether it’s addressing the climate emergency, the challenges of energy supply, the sustainable use of natural resources, an aging population, mobility, the development of a more inclusive and privacy-respecting digital society, or the redefinition of housing adapted to changing lifestyles and family structures, the issues are numerous and profound.

Awareness of these societal challenges and the will to act have rarely been so prevalent among the general public, particularly among younger generations. It is one of the strengths of our modern society to be able to question its values and reinvent itself, including by developing new modes of decision-making and co-creation.

In this context, the role of the engineer, computer scientist, or data scientist is first and foremost to define and expand the realm of possibilities. Beyond dreams and intentions, it is often the technological alternatives that are developed that make it possible to build different futures. For a choice to be made, solutions must indeed be available or attainable.

More generally, graduates of the Faculty of Applied Sciences also have an important duty to fulfill as citizens. Societal issues are highly complex. Addressing them and making decisions cannot be satisfied with slogans and a few catchy phrases on social media. It is therefore up to engineers and scientists to contribute their expertise and critical perspective to these debates in order to participate in making pragmatic and informed decisions.

I invite you to discover the many facets of the programs offered by the Faculty of Applied Sciences, which will help you become engaged and responsible citizens capable of shaping our shared future.
