The doctorate in practice

In the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the doctoral examination consists of the writing of an original dissertation based on research results obtained by the candidate working alone or as part of a team, and the public presentation of this work. The research must be scientifically transferable and reproducible.

To undertake a doctorate is to choose to complement one's2nd cycle studies (Master's) with specific training for a future profession: that of researcher. For at least three years, doctoral students carry out their research under the supervision of a promoter.

In addition to the promoter, who supervises the day-to-day research work and introduces the doctoral student to international research networks, support is provided by a thesis committee whose members are themselves holders of the title of doctor with thesis, and chosen for their skills. The thesis committee advises doctoral students on preparing and writing their thesis.

Doctoral research at the FSA is attached to one of the Faculty'ssix doctoral colleges.

If you'd like to take the plunge, get in touch with a professor in the Faculty who is active in the field of research that interests you...

For students holding a degree obtained outside Belgium, an application form must be completed by the future doctoral student (form for holders of an EU degree - form for holders of a HUE degree)
