Biography
Since childhood, Gaëtan Kerschen dreamed of becoming a pilot. Although life took a different turn, it never took him away from the skies. After graduating as an aerospace engineer from the University of Liège in 1999, he quickly specialised in the study of non-linear vibrations in mechanical systems, a subject he explored in greater depth in his doctoral thesis.
After pursuing his research in Greece at the National Technical University of Athens and then in the United States at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he returned to ULiège, where he has been head of the Space Structures and Systems Laboratory (within the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Research Unit) since 2007.
His work focuses on the dynamics of aerospace structures satellite orbits and the design of nanosatellites. , satellite orbits and the design of nanosatellites. He is notably behind the development of non-linear vibration analysis software used in the space, automotive and mechanical engineering sectors.
Passionate about passing on his knowledge, he is also co-initiator of the OUFTI educational project, a nanosatellite designed entirely by students and successfully launched in 2016 by a Soyuz rocket from Kourou. It's a great way to combine cutting-edge research with training the engineers of tomorrow.
In 2012, Gaëtan Kerschen was awarded an ERC Starting Grant for his NOVIB project, dedicated to the design and testing of a prototype vibration damper for aircraft wings. In 2017, he obtained further funding from the European Research Council, an ERC Proof of Concept Grant, for the NI2D project, for the commercialisation of non-linear vibration analysis software for the aerospace, automotive and mechanical engineering sectors, developed as part of his previous ERC grant.
In 2025, he was awarded a third ERC grant, an Advanced Grant, for his ENTIRE project, which aims to develop a new generation of vibration tests for aerospace structures such as aircraft, launchers and satellites.
