Biography

Prof. Dr. Shady Attia is Professor of Sustainable Architecture and Building Technology at the University of Liège, where he founded and leads the Sustainable Building Design (SBD) Lab, and Adjunct Professor at Southeast University, Nanjing, China. His research focuses on decision support for high-performance and climate-resilient buildings and cities, applying building performance simulation, life cycle assessment, and multi-objective optimization to address carbon emissions, renovation strategies, and climate adaptation.

He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and two books (Regenerative and Positive Impact Architecture, Springer 2018; Net Zero Energy Buildings, 2nd ed., Elsevier 2025), as well as numerous technical reports and conference papers. He has developed datasets and databases to characterize the building stock in Belgium and Western Europe, supporting large-scale modeling for decarbonization.

His projects include RENOWAVE (FNRS PDR) on dynamic LCA-based retrofitting, DeConstruct (with Colruyt Group Sustainability) on circular design and disassembly, HaBiMo (ARES) on bioclimatic modular housing in Burkina Faso, SurChauffe on overheating metrics, ILOTS on urban heat island mitigation in Brussels, and OCCuPANt on climate change impacts on Belgian buildings. He also contributes to multiple IEA programs (Annexes 97, 89, and 80; ES Task 43).

Prof. Attia served as president of the FNRS PE8 Expert Panel (2020¿2025) and is recognized among the top 1% of scientists worldwide in building and construction, energy, and the built environment. He advises the European Commission on circularity and carbon neutrality, serves as a Research Council Member of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), is a reviewer for the "AI for Science" program of the Singapore Science Foundation, and is a member of the Scientific Council of Italy's National Research Council (CNR). He is also a member of NBN, the CEN/TC 350 shadow committee (sustainability of construction works), and ISO/TC 52016. He is part of the Belgian IPCC expert community and contributed to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6, 2022), notably on the role of buildings in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

He is Executive Editor of MethodsX and Data in Brief (Elsevier), Editor of Energy and Buildings, and Associate Editor of Green Technologies and Sustainability. He is Section Editor of Sustainability (MDPI) and serves on the editorial boards of Buildings and Atmosphere.

A registered architect with the Dutch Order of Architects, he has completed more than 62 built projects. He is LEED-accredited, a USGBC Faculty Member, and has collaborated with UNDP, USAID, and GIZ on projects addressing climate resilience, building energy efficiency, and sustainable urban design. His YouTube channel @Shady_Attia reaches a global audience with more than 1.9 million views and 33,000 subscribers.
