Academic fees
T
he « Landscape » decree requires the Faculties to draw up a list of expenses beyond the registration fee for each curriculum. The goal is to inform students as fully and as realistically as possible about the cost of the studies they wish to pursue before they enrol.
The estimated costs below* are directly related to learning activities. They are to be added to the registration fee and to the accommodation, transport and food expenditures documented on this page.
Fees common to all students
The costs listed below often depend on the student’s personal situation and on their choices:
- Purchase of a computer : between €700 and €1000
- Purchase of a graphic calculator : about €100
- Course notes and mandatory reference books : about €100 per year
- Non-mandatory reference books : about €100 per year
The course notes and some of the main reference books used in our School of Engineering are sold at the best price by the Centrale des cours.
Reference books can also be consulted for free at the library or online.
(*) Which computer to choose?
Computer science :
There is no model specially recommended. It is not necessary to have a particularly powerful computer, any computer thta is fairly t recent (last 3 years) is perfectly suitable.
In terms of ergonomics, it is better to opt for a model that is light and easy to carry (less than 2 kg), with a screen that is not too big (15 inches max).
It is advisable to avoid Intel i3 processors, generally everything from i5 is correct.
The operating system used does not matter, it is always possible to use a virtual machine or a Docker container to run another system. Under these conditions, ideally, it is best to have as much RAM as possible.
The faculty also offers computer labs, but the vast majority of students prefer to work on their own laptops.
Engineers and Engineer in Architecture :
A computer is an important working tool in higher education. You'll use it every day to exploit the electronic resources made available, to participate in forums, to interact with all members of the university community, to write summaries or personal work, etc.
The University has subscribed to a Microsoft Office365 Education contract that benefits all students. Office365 Edu includes a range of services accessible online, as well as applications that can be installed locally on your personal computer: Microsoft Office Pro Plus suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and OneNote), OneDrive (system for storing, sharing and synchronizing your documents in the Microsoft Cloud), Teams (collaborative working system, including videoconferencing).
In the School of Engineering, a personal laptop is also useful for developing computer code or running specific programs. The tools and environments used are generally free (e.g. Python) or a student license is provided as part of the course (e.g. NX Siemens Simcenter).
The vast majority of laptops on the market have the appropriate technical features for these different uses. For scientific use, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB hard disk and a mid-range processor are recommended.
Depending on your affinity or experience, you can opt for a computer running iOS (particularly if you work in a creative environment where graphics are important), Windows (the most frequent choice) or Linux (for those with a greater affinity for programming). Unfortunately, some software is not available on all platforms, so alternative solutions (e.g. shared computer rooms, virtual machines, etc.) are used to enable everyone to work and study efficiently.
Fees specific to students achieving their master's degree
